Itinerary

Imagine gliding through a landscape so beautiful it feels almost too perfect to be real. Snow-capped peaks reflected in turquoise lakes. Medieval castle towers rising from rocky island shores. Flower-crowned cows parading through valleys where waterfalls thunder from 1,000-foot cliffs. This is Switzerland in September, and you will experience it all from the comfort of some of the world's most spectacular trains.

From the cosmopolitan energy of Geneva to the alpine drama of the Jungfrau region, this journey carries you through the very heart of Switzerland. You will ride first class aboard the legendary GoldenPass Express as vineyards give way to mountain passes, venture to the "Top of Europe" at 11,332 feet, wander the cobblestone lanes of Lucerne's medieval Old Town, and raise a glass of local wine with your travel companions as the lights of Zurich shimmer below.

Eight days, seven unforgettable destinations, and the kind of friendships that linger long after you've returned home. Switzerland by train is not just a journey through a country. It is a journey through a storybook, and your chapter begins now.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1 - GENEVA: ARRIVAL & OLD TOWN EVENING

Welcome to Switzerland! Your adventure begins the moment you land at Geneva International Airport, where a private transfer whisks you to your elegant lakefront hotel. After settling in and freshening up, you'll gather with your fellow travelers for an evening walking tour through Geneva's enchanting Old Town. Wander cobblestone streets past the soaring towers of St. Peter's Cathedral, duck through hidden medieval passageways, and stroll the lakefront promenade as the famous Jet d'Eau fountain sends water shimmering 140 meters into the evening sky. The night concludes around the table at a welcoming dinner of Swiss specialties, the perfect setting for first conversations and the beginning of new friendships.

DAY 2 - LAKE GENEVA: FREE MORNING & MONTREUX

This morning is yours to explore Geneva at your own rhythm. Stroll the elegant lakeside gardens, step inside the moving International Red Cross Museum, or browse the boutiques of the Old Town at a leisurely pace. Around midday, the group boards a scenic train hugging Lake Geneva's northern shore toward Montreux, often called the Swiss Riviera. The views along the way are breathtaking: vineyard-covered hillsides cascading toward the shimmering water, with the Alps rising dramatically beyond. By late afternoon you're settled into your room at the magnificent Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, one of Switzerland's grandest hotels perched right on the famous flower-lined promenade. The evening is free to explore, perhaps finding the beloved Freddie Mercury statue or savoring dinner with a view across the sparkling lake.

DAY 3 - CHÂTEAU DE CHILLON & THE GOLDENPASS EXPRESS TO INTERLAKEN

After breakfast, your group visits the fairytale Château de Chillon, Switzerland's most beloved historic monument perched on a rocky island just minutes from the hotel. Wander through medieval halls, towers, and dungeon chambers where Lord Byron once carved his name into stone. This afternoon brings one of the great train rides in the world: the renowned GoldenPass Express. Settle into panoramic coaches as the train climbs through the terraced Lavaux vineyards, crests the alpine pass, and sweeps down into the Bernese Oberland. Watch as lakeside elegance transforms into mountain drama, peak after peak filling your window. You'll arrive in Interlaken by early evening, nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau watching over you from above.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodations: Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa or Equivalent

DAY 4 - INTERLAKEN & LAUTERBRUNNEN: THE VALLEY OF 72 WATERFALLS

Take a leisurely morning exploring Interlaken at your own pace, strolling the Höhematte promenade with its picture-perfect mountain views, browsing Swiss chocolate shops and watch boutiques, or settling into a lakeside café with a cappuccino and a good book. This afternoon, the group boards a short train to Lauterbrunnen, one of Switzerland's most dramatic valleys, where sheer rock walls rise 1,000 feet on either side and 72 waterfalls pour from the cliffs. September brings a particularly magical tradition: the Alpabzug, the centuries-old cow descent from alpine pastures. Festively decorated cows adorned with flower crowns and massive bells parade through the valley, led by farmers in traditional dress celebrating a safe summer season in the high mountains. This evening, your group gathers for a traditional Swiss fondue dinner in a local restaurant, melting cheese, warm bread, and wonderful conversation all around.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 5 - GRINDELWALD & JUNGFRAUJOCH: TOP OF EUROPE

Today takes you to the roof of the Alps. The group travels to the charming alpine village of Grindelwald, sitting beneath the legendary North Face of the Eiger, then boards the state-of-the-art Eiger Express gondola for a thrilling 15-minute ascent from the valley floor to the Eiger Glacier station, soaring past the mountain's iconic north wall. From there, you continue upward to the Jungfraujoch at 11,332 feet, the highest railway station in Europe, where snow and glacial ice stretch as far as the eye can see. Step onto the viewing platforms for sweeping vistas across the longest glacier in the Alps, then explore the magical Ice Palace, a world of chambers and sculptures carved deep within the glacier itself. After descending to Grindelwald for lunch, the afternoon is free to relax, take a lakeside walk, or enjoy the spa back at the grand hotel.

Accommodations: Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa or Equivalent

DAY 6 - THE LUZERN-INTERLAKEN EXPRESS & LUCERNE

This morning you board another world-class panoramic train, the Luzern-Interlaken Express, for a journey that showcases Central Switzerland at its finest. Large windows frame views of crystalline Lake Brienz, where waterfalls tumble from forested cliffs into brilliant turquoise water, and the train climbs over the Brünig Pass through sweeping alpine meadows before descending into Lucerne by midday. This is one of Switzerland's most photogenic cities, where medieval architecture meets the edge of a lake ringed by mountains. After checking into your hotel, a local guide leads the group across the iconic 14th-century Chapel Bridge, its painted wooden panels still vivid after centuries, past the poignant Lion Monument carved from living rock, and through the colorful Old Town with its frescoed guild houses and splashing fountains.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodations: Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern or Equivalent

DAY 7 - LUCERNE FREE TIME & FAREWELL IN ZURICH

Savor a slow, unhurried morning in Lucerne. Browse the morning market, take a boat out on the lake, or simply sit with a coffee and watch the swans drift beneath the Chapel Bridge. Around mid-afternoon, the group catches the swift 42-minute express train to Zurich, Switzerland's largest and most cosmopolitan city, passing Lake Zug and rolling green countryside along the way. After settling into the beautiful Storchen Zürich hotel in the heart of the Old Town, you'll have time to explore the cobblestone lanes of the Altstadt, discover the twin towers of the Grossmünster church, or admire the Chagall windows glowing in the Fraumünster. This evening, your group gathers one final time for a farewell dinner, sharing memories of mountain peaks, scenic railways, and the laughter of women who arrived as strangers and leave as friends.
