It's all about southern comfort as this Gutsy Women tour explores two true icons of the American South— Charleston and Savannah. Your stay in Charleston features a wonderful plantation visit as well as time for dining and shopping, or whatever the Southern ambiance compels you to do! Live oaks draped in Spanish moss, beautiful Victorian homes and gardens, city monuments, and museums dating back over 250 years are just a few of the things you'll experience in Savannah. Plus, a reception at Wayne Chambers Gallery, a special performance at the famous Savannah Theater, and dinner at Paula Deen's Lady & Sons Restaurant are also included.

Itinerary

DAY 1, Sunday - Arrival in Charleston
Arrive in Charleston and transfer independently to the hotel. This evening, meet the group in the hotel lobby, then enjoy a short walk to Poogan's Porch for a welcome dinner
Overnight: Charleston
Meals: Dinner

DAY 2, Monday - Charleston City Tour and Middleton Plantation
We begin our first morning in Charleston with a guided tour of the city's historic sites and see for ourselves why this southern gem is considered a "living museum." The tour includes views of the College of Charleston, Harleston Village (one of the early suburbs of the city), the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, Rainbow Row, and the famous Battery, with its elegant town houses built by planters and merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Following the tour, we'll enjoy lunch and a visit to Middleton Place Plantation, one of the city's most charming estates. We'll wander through America's oldest landscaped gardens, begun by Henry Middleton in 1741, and see the grand Classic style of 18th-century Europe, following the principles of Andre le Notre, who designed the gardens of Versailles. We'll also learn about the role that four generations of the Middleton family played in American history up through the Civil War. With the evening at leisure, you might consider visiting one of the nearby pubs for dinner and some local music
Overnight: Charleston
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 3, Tuesday - Carriage Ride in Beauffort and Wayne Chambers Gallery Reception
After breakfast we depart for our tour of Savannah, with a stop en route for a horse-drawn carriage tour of Beaufort's Historic District. Enjoy an open-air ride through this charming southern town to view famous Antebellum homes. The term Antebellum literally means "before war," with many of the homes having been built three or four decades before the Civil War. The Antebellum homes or "plantation homes" feature architecture of the Greek Revival, Classical Revival and Federal style, and are easily distinguished by their vast central entrances with balconies, columns and pillars. Following our carriage ride, we'll have lunch in Beaufort before continuing to Savannah. On arrival, we'll check in to the hotel, then tour Savannah, stopping at the Wayne Chambers Gallery for a private reception with the artist
Overnight: Savannah
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Reception

DAY 4, Wednesday - Jekyll Island Tour, Sea Turtle Visitors Center, Paula Deen's Lady & Sons Restaurant and Ghost Tour
This morning we drive to Jekyll Island for a tour of the island and its historic hotel. Known as a private "millionaire's club," the Jekyll Island Club was the winter home of an elite group, "roughing it" in contrast to their other homes in Newport, Chicago and New York. We will tour the island's historic district, a small collection of architectural gems reflecting a renewed interest in the revival of European styles. During the drive around the Island, we'll hear of its history, see ruins of Major Horton's colonial tabby, and the old brewery. Following the tour, you'll have free time for lunch before a tour of the newly established Georgia Sea Turtle Center. We then depart Jekyll Island for Darien, Georgia, home to the smallest church in America. Located in north McIntosh County, this little sanctuary has become an annual stop for thousands of I-95 and Highway 17 travelers. The church was constructed in 1949, a dream come true for Mrs. Anges Harper, a local grocer, who wanted it to serve as a place of meditation and rest for weary travelers. We then return to Savannah to freshen up for one of the true highlights of the tour: dinner at The Lady & Sons Restaurant. Owned and operated by chef Paula Deen, we'll be treated to a delicious down-home meal with traditional Southern hospitality. Afterwards, you will be taken on a ghost tour. While walking along the city's squares, our guide will boast tales of the Savannah's legendary history, culture and allure
Overnight: Savannah
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 5, Thursday - Mercer Williams House, Telfair Museum and Savannah Theater
This morning we'll visit the Mercer Williams Museum, a Civil War-era residence of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fame. Next, we'll visit the Telfair Museum of Art where we will enjoy a guided tour. We'll take in an early farewell dinner at Savannah's "Olde Pink House" before concluding the evening with a special musical performance at the Savannah Theater
Overnight: Savannah
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 6, Friday - Return Home
After breakfast, transfer independently to the Savannah airport for your return flight home
Meals: Breakfast
